This past weekend, we had the privilege to attend the Morgan County Cattleman's Association 85th annual banquet! This year, we gathered with over 300 community members, neighbors, and friends to support local agriculture in our region. The event consists of a silent and live auction with the goal of raising funds for scholarships, participating in agricultural promotion activities, and, as we showcased a few weeks ago, taking third-grade students to the Stock Show! We've been donating a quarter of beef with the processing to the scholarship auction for many years and this year was no exception. Once the auction had wrapped up, $54,000 was raised as a result. What exactly is on Jeff's agenda for the day? Doing his best at patching together our portable corral in the field enough to get it home until we can fix it the correct way. After getting cows hauled home at the end of last week, Jeff went to bring all of our equipment home, and when putting the panels up, the angle iron that was attached to the pully broke! While this wasn't the most convenient time or place for the corral to break, at least it didn't land on anyone's toes and waited to break until we had all of the cows home. Good thing Jeff is "go with the flow" and willing to make some in field modifications when needed!

Today Jeff has been hard at work getting fence fixed at the ranch so we can bring our spring herd home as soon as possible. The cows have happily spent most of the winter on cornstalks, but with feed becoming scarce and winter weather headed our way in the coming weeks, it is time for them to come home. We will be happy to have all of the cows at the ranch as we gear up for calving season to start!

Last week, Eric ventured out on his annual field trip to the National Western Stock Show. Each year, the Morgan County Cattlemen's Association makes it their mission to have every third-grade student in the county be able to attend. This year, Eric tagged along with Weldon Valley to help chaperone for the day. His favorite part is always seeing the little's reaction to shearing a sheep! We're finally on the tail end of this latest arctic blast. Yesterday, Eric's pickup was reading -13 degrees on his way to Weldona. By the time they were finished feeding and began walking through the feedlot, the temperature was still flirting with the single digits. On the last tank, he had to break the ice, he documented just how quickly a wet glove would freeze to the metal pipe separating the tanks of two pens. We see the 40s in the forecast for Friday, and we know both us, and especially the cattle are looking forward to it! The only thing worse than having a four-wheeler in the shop that isn't running well, is one that will run long enough to get you a couple miles from the ranch and leave you stranded with no warning. The red Honda has made more than one of us fall victim to the walk of shame back to the ranch. Berrie has spent the last couple of months on and off trying to figure out why it would just die on everyone. Thankfully he has the issue under control, and it should be up and running before we know it! 🥳

It's another frosty morning on the ranch. Today, we loaded up a few head of cattle for processing locker beef orders at @stagecoachmeatcompany . The thermometer in the pickup was reading -3 when the last animal made its way into the trailer. Our weather this time of year can be more challenging on cattle, but the sign of frost or snow on their back is a good indication that they aren't in danger from cold temps and that their body heat is not escaping. We've always loved the term "freezer beef," but only when the beef is in the freezer and not the other way around! Winter has its grip on us in Northeastern Colorado, and the flakes are flying! This makes for an excellent excuse for Eric to fire up his snowmobile, which he self-named the Black Widow. After the extra snow we received overnight and another chance for more on Thursday we are getting prepared. Eric purchased this sled as a vehicle for the ranch in the event of another snowmageddon event, but thankfully, Eric hasn’t needed it for his commute or chores yet! The winter of 2023 nearly gave him a run for his money trying to make it to Weldona!
