On her way to work, Kirsten caught a quick picture On her way to work, Kirsten caught a quick picture of the sunrise she saw as she was on her way out the door. While mornings aren't really her thing (everyone who works at the ranch would agree), seeing a Colorado sunrise this beautiful makes having to wake up early a little bit more worth it!

All summer we have had heifers turned out with the All summer we have had heifers turned out with the Fall herd, letting them grow, and awaiting their turn to be bred and essentially be added to our herd full time. Now that the bulls are getting ready to be turned out with the Fall herd, it was time to separate the heifers from the cows so we can choose which bulls to turn out with the heifers. While this group has had time to get bigger than the heifers in the Spring herd do, we still select bulls that are higher in calving ease. This helps us when calving rolls around, as we have fewer issues with heifers having complications when calving!

Earlier this month, we had some close family and f Earlier this month, we had some close family and friends come out during the week to help us brand. With fewer head to brand than we normally do, we didn't need quite as big of a crew to help with our Fall herd. We had a great day spent with a great group of people, and got the calves worked just in time to have some steak 🥩 for lunch and catch up with everyone we don't get to see near enough!

Mother Nature gave Eric an early birthday gift thi Mother Nature gave Eric an early birthday gift this year!
With only 60 acres of silage left to harvest, we were blessed with nearly 2.5 inches of rain on September 23rd-just enough of a break for Eric to sneak away.

Some of his fraternity brothers had a fly-fishing trip planned in Casper, Wyoming, and thanks to the rain delay, Eric was able to join them. They spent a day on the water and a night laughing and reminiscing like old times.
The next day, they headed back to Colorado, toured the new freezer and packing facilities, and Eric treated everyone to a delicious steak dinner. On Sunday morning, the guys stopped by the ranch, loaded up some beef, and made the trip back to Iowa.

All in all, it was the perfect little getaway for this September-loving birthday boy. 🎣🥩🌧️

The fall calves that were born a year ago spent th The fall calves that were born a year ago spent the summer out on grass, and before winter makes it our way, it was time to bring them back home. They moved between multiple sections throughout the summer, making sure that each section of pasture ground wasn't overgrazed, and allowed the nearly 250 head of cattle plenty to eat. It was quite the day trying to get the calves gathered and put in the portable corral to load up and haul them home. Now after a day off of harvesting, we should probably get back in the fields and get back to work!

Mesa found her way out to one of the feed trucks w Mesa found her way out to one of the feed trucks while doing chores this morning, and while Eric isn't a big fan of the dogs being in equipment, Kirsten couldn't help but let her go for a quick ride. Mesa had to make sure she kept an eye on the cattle in each pen and make sure Kirsten was doing a good job while feeding!

The bottle calves got a little fun in the sun than The bottle calves got a little fun in the sun thanks to Tobyn! Since we have to feed bottle calves multiple times a day, there isn't an ideal place to put them where they can get exercise and run around. That being said, every so often we try to get them out of their pen and allow them to run around and stretch their legs. Good thing Tobyn is quick, because they sure do like to chase him!

When you notice an air leak while driving through When you notice an air leak while driving through the corn field it means you have to make a quick stop to see what is going on. Turns out one of the air bags on the trailer was busted, preventing the truck from keeping enough air built to keep the breaks from locking up. While it's not an ideal time to be having to fix equipment, Jeff and Berrie were quick to get the trailer fixed and back in the field to keep rolling. Good thing Jeff isn't very big, because he was stuck in pretty tight quarters! 🤣

Jodi's mom, Carolyn, hosted a fantastic family reu Jodi's mom, Carolyn, hosted a fantastic family reunion over Labor Day weekend—and Eric, our professional beef chef, was all in! He spent most of the weekend smoking 45 pounds of brisket for the crowd, even setting alarms in the middle of the night to make sure everything came out perfectly.
The result? A main dish that was a smoking success-so good, there were hardly any leftovers. Beef-it’s what’s for dinner (and honestly, every other meal too)! 🥩🔥

We are still as busy as ever getting earlage harve We are still as busy as ever getting earlage harvested and put up before winter arrives! This time of year we keep ourselves pretty busy between trying to get everything harvested and making sure our cows and calves as well as the cattle we are getting into the feedlot are taken care of to the best of our ability. Thankfully we have ourselves a pretty good crew who is up for the busy schedules and hard work. You can be sure to catch us in trucks and tractors for the next few weeks still! 🚜🚛

Eric has spent the month all over northern Colorad Eric has spent the month all over northern Colorado with the pickup and trailer helping load and ship calves to the ranch, meaning the flatbed pickup has had quite a bit of wear and tear to it the last couple of weeks. This pickup also spends most of the summer hauling cattle to the processor for our customers. That being said, we do routine maintenance to make sure we don't leave either of our fearless leaders stranded on the side of the road. Good thing Berrie doesn't mind a little shop time! 🔧

Fall calving didn't go as smoothly as we would've Fall calving didn't go as smoothly as we would've liked, leaving us with two bottle calves 🍼, but we did end up with a couple cute faces that get to hang out at the ranch for a while. One of these calves had a mom with some milk issues and was not able to care for her properly, while the other one was left with no mom (or at least we couldn't figure out who it was). Not knowing who the mother of a calf is, is frustrating for many reasons. It leaves us guessing if we have a bad mom who is willing to leave their calf, or if we had a set of twins, one of which didn't get accepted by mom. Either way we do what we have to and try to care for the calves to the best of our ability and keep them healthy until it's time to wean and go into the feedlot with the other calves their age!
