It looked a lot colder than it actually was, with the overnight low hovering around 20; we know a seasonal polar cold snap is likely in the cards for later on this winter, so we aren't complaining. We had some deja vu this morning after we covered one of our silage piles for the second time! A large gust of wind overnight turned the sheet of plastic into a sail, but it didn't take much wind to send the plastic whipping through the air! Right now, we are a little sparse on the tires this year after another year of yields that are near record-setting. Thankfully, we have some spare tractor weights and railroad ties to get us through the next few weeks as we continue to make a dent in the pile with all of the new cattle we've brought into the feedlot. We are back in the fields after we finished chopping silage to plant a combination of grazing and cover crops. The mixture of seeds includes Oats, Triticale, Canola, Turnips, Radishes, field peas, and Sorghum Sudan. There are multiple reasons we plant cover crops. Still, the three main benefits to us are the following: Making use of the extended growing season, improving soil health while helping prevent winter erosion, and even being used for carbon sequestration up until the first big freeze.
