The only thing worse than having a four-wheeler in the shop that isn't running well, is one that will run long enough to get you a couple miles from the ranch and leave you stranded with no warning. The red Honda has made more than one of us fall victim to the walk of shame back to the ranch. Berrie has spent the last couple of months on and off trying to figure out why it would just die on everyone. Thankfully he has the issue under control, and it should be up and running before we know it! 🥳

It's another frosty morning on the ranch. Today, we loaded up a few head of cattle for processing locker beef orders at @stagecoachmeatcompany . The thermometer in the pickup was reading -3 when the last animal made its way into the trailer. Our weather this time of year can be more challenging on cattle, but the sign of frost or snow on their back is a good indication that they aren't in danger from cold temps and that their body heat is not escaping. We've always loved the term "freezer beef," but only when the beef is in the freezer and not the other way around! Winter has its grip on us in Northeastern Colorado, and the flakes are flying! This makes for an excellent excuse for Eric to fire up his snowmobile, which he self-named the Black Widow. After the extra snow we received overnight and another chance for more on Thursday we are getting prepared. Eric purchased this sled as a vehicle for the ranch in the event of another snowmageddon event, but thankfully, Eric hasn’t needed it for his commute or chores yet! The winter of 2023 nearly gave him a run for his money trying to make it to Weldona! Connor caught a quick video of the last load of cows taken to cornstalks for the winter, and it didn't take these girls long to put their heads down and start eating the corn left on the ground. They seem pretty happy to have a change of scenery and diet for a few months. While it is a bit of drive from the ranch to check on them every day, we are thankful we don't have to keep them locked up and feed them every day!

Has anyone ever wondered what it's like to watch cattle get shocked by an electric fence? Well, when the calves in the feedlot got turned out for the day, and Kirsten watched a few of them scratching on the wire even though it was hot, Jeff had to show her how the calves were supposed to react when they touch the fence! With the ground being as dry as it is and the calves having a thick winter coat, the fence wasn't quite doing the job to keep them from getting out. While Jeff and Kirsten were messing around a few of the calves escaped into the horse pasture and it was all hands on deck to get them put back in before dark.
