We had some deja vu this morning after we covered one of our silage piles for the second time! A large gust of wind overnight turned the sheet of plastic into a sail, but it didn't take much wind to send the plastic whipping through the air! Right now, we are a little sparse on the tires this year after another year of yields that are near record-setting. Thankfully, we have some spare tractor weights and railroad ties to get us through the next few weeks as we continue to make a dent in the pile with all of the new cattle we've brought into the feedlot. Last week, Eric and Kathy decided that it was finally time to add another stock trailer to the fleet, this one made of shiny aluminum! In the last few years, we have done a lot more highway driving with our trailer when it comes time to take cattle into processing. We are back in the fields after we finished chopping silage to plant a combination of grazing and cover crops. The mixture of seeds includes Oats, Triticale, Canola, Turnips, Radishes, field peas, and Sorghum Sudan. There are multiple reasons we plant cover crops. Still, the three main benefits to us are the following: Making use of the extended growing season, improving soil health while helping prevent winter erosion, and even being used for carbon sequestration up until the first big freeze. To finish up the week and celebrate earlage harvest being over, we got to cover all of the earlage piles to ensure they begin their fermentation process and to limit the amount of mold that grows. While this project isn't a fan favorite around the ranch, it is a necessity to making sure we get the most out of the feed we put up for our cattle. As we were waiting for the loader to bring us more tires, Eric and Berrie had a great time "playing in the sandbox" talking about the benefits of feeding earlage.

Tis the season of getting calves into the feedlot! It is weaning time for many ranchers in our part of the state, which means we are starting to get calves in from small ranchers in our area. Once we get the calves unloaded, counted and sorted based on their sex, we weigh the calves so we have a starting weight as they enter the feedlot. Knowing this helps us know how much feed they should be consuming and helps us track them as they continue to grow. While it is nice to see the feedlot start filling up again, the calves bawling for a week can get a little tiring to listen to!

It never fails that during harvest season we end up in the shop trying to patch equipment together long enough to finish up cutting. We had to take a short break from earlage harvest to fix not only the cutter, but also one of our harvest trucks. While we are sure that Eric and Jeff are quite capable of getting the chopper up and running in no time, we are glad Sis is there to supervise them and make sure they stay on task!
